태아 때 휴대전화 전자파에 지나치게 노출되면 나중에 주의력결핍과잉행동장애(ADHD)와 유사한 행동이 나타날 수 있다는 쥐 실험결과가 나왔다고 사이언스 데일리가 15일(현지시간) 보도했다.

미국 예일 대학 의과대학 산부인과 생식-내분비-불임치료실장 휴 테일러(Hugh Taylor) 박사는 새끼를 밴 쥐들을 두 그룹으로 나누어 한 그룹은 벨소리를 죽인 휴대전화를 우리 위쪽에 놓고 전화를 자주 걸고 다른 그룹은 같은 조건이지만 전화를 걸지 않았다.

그 후 태어난 쥐들이 다 자랐을 때 일련의 심리-행동 테스트를 실시한 결과 태어나기 전 휴대전화의 전자파에 노출되었던 쥐들은 대조군에 비해 과잉행동과 기억력 저하를 나타냈다고 테일러 박사는 밝혔다.

이러한 행동변화는 뇌의 사령탑이라고 할 수 있는 전전두엽의 신경세포 발달에 휴대전화 전자파 노출이 영향을 미쳤기 때문으로 생각된다고 그는 말했다.

최근 아이들 사이에 행동장애가 증가하고 있는 것은 부분적으로 태아 때 휴대전화 전자파 노출과 연관이 있을 가능성이 있다고 그는 덧붙였다.

그러나 쥐는 새끼를 배는 기간이 19일에 불과하고 또 사람보다 뇌가 덜 발달된 상태로 태어나기 때문에 이 쥐실험 결과가 사람에게서도 나타날 수 있을지는 알 수 없으며 이를 확인하기 위해서는 연구가 더 필요하다고 테일러 박사는 말했다.

이 연구결과는 영국의 과학전문지 '과학 리포트(Science Reports)' 최신호(3월15일자)에 실렸다.

Babies might be given attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), when they are exposed to cell phone radiation in utero, a new study reports.

The researchers from Yale School of Medicine positioned a cell phone on an “uninterrupted active call” above a cage containing pregnant mice, throughout their 17 days of gestation. Then they tested the offspring as they grew up.

Compared to mice that were not exposed to the radiofrequency, “mice exposed in-utero were hyperactive and had impaired memory,” says the study, published Thursday in Scientific Reports, a Nature publication.

In other words, they exhibited signs of something like ADHD. Brain tests showed reduced transmissions in the prefrontal cortex, which “is responsible for executive functions by screening distractions and maintaining attention in goal-oriented behaviors,” the study says.

Senior author Hugh S. Taylor, professor and chief of the Division of Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility at Yale, is nationally known for his work showing the health dangers of the plastic ingredient known as BPA.

In this new study, “we have shown that behavioral problems in mice that resemble ADHD are caused by cell phone exposure in the womb,” he says in a Yale press release. “The rise in behavioral disorders in human children may be in part due to fetal cellular telephone irradiation exposure.”

The release continues: “Taylor said that further testing is needed in humans to better understand the mechanisms behind these findings and to establish safe exposure limits during pregnancy. Nevertheless, he said, limiting exposure of the fetus seems warranted.”
